# Getting started with JupyterHub

## Log in to JupyterHub

1. Navigate to your Jupyter URL and click **Sign in with Anaconda Cloud**.
2. Enter your Anaconda credentials and click **Log In**.
3. If necessary, click **Start my server** to launch Jupyter.

   > [!NOTE]
   >
   > If you are already logged into `anaconda.com/app`, selecting **Sign in with Anaconda Cloud** signs you in automatically.

## Create an environment

Before you begin working in a notebook, create an environment (A self-contained, isolated space for installing and running software packages.) to use as your notebook's kernel (The interpreter and other behind-the-scenes systems that run your code.). To learn the basics of working with conda environments, see [Environments](https://anaconda.com/docs/getting-started/working-with-conda/environments.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> If you do not create an environment before you attempt to download packages (Software files and information about the software, such as its name, version, and description, bundled into a file that can be installed and managed by a package manager.), an error occurs. This protects the base `/opt/jupyterhub` environment.

> [!TIP]
>
> If you want your environment to be shown as a tile on the JupyterLab launch page, include the `ipykernel` package in your environment:
>
> ```sh Example theme={null}
> conda create --name custom_env ipykernel python=<VERSION>
> ```
>
> Comments
>
> Replace \<VERSION> with your preferred version of Python.
